The building dates back to the Meiji era, but Touji Yanagiya has modern facilities and lets you enjoy the character of a traditional Japanese building. You can book a room or rent a separate building. The staff respected our privacy, and we enjoyed the food, Jigokumushi, and the Japanese-style atmosphere. The restaurant steams vegetables, meat, and fish using the hell-steaming method. They can prepare ingredients, or you can bring your own food and drinks. There’s also a tasty Italian restaurant. In the courtyard, a stone jigoku kettle releases 100°C steam when its valve is turned, letting visitors try Kannawa’s famous “jigoku steaming.” There’s a self-cooking room on the second floor of the main building, with a refrigerator, utensils, dishes, and basic seasonings including soy sauce, ponzu, salt, and sugar, for preparing your own meals or steaming food. The first-floor large bathroom has a spacious indoor bath fed by the hot spring source. The second-floor large bathroom has an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and a steam sauna.

The emergency lights can make some rooms bright at night, so a sleep mask might help. Otherwise, the traditional-style hotel was lovely, with its own onsens and natural steam cooking facilities that you can use for free. Just buy groceries and cook in the in-house kitchen. The staff were super helpful and friendly. There’s great soba across the street, but put your name on the list early. Several other onsens are an easy walk away.

We loved the look of this ryokan, and the room was comfortable and nice. Dinner isn’t offered in the same way as at other ryokans, but there’s an Italian restaurant inside that looks lovely, though a bit pricey. They do provide a fully equipped kitchen for guests to prepare food using the self-service onsen steam kitchen. Grab some groceries and give it a try, it’s a rare opportunity.
