Sanso Tensui

The only real drawback is the location: there isn’t much within walking distance, and the town itself is tiny. They do run shuttles into town, though, and I never felt much need to leave. If you’re passing through, Sakuradachi falls is worth a look from below. It’s under a 10-minute walk from the train station. We stayed two nights, and I could happily have spent all of that time in the gorgeous room, soaking in the private onsen or reading in the sitting room by the river. I’m covered in tattoos, so I knew I couldn’t use the public baths, but there are five excellent private baths you can reserve. The food was incredible, especially the two dinners. Breakfast was good too, though I’m not much of a breakfast person. The staff were friendly and so attentive that they seemed to appear as soon as we rang. Best stay I’ve had anywhere.

We came here to celebrate my 50th birthday, and the mountain setting was just right for relaxing and unwinding. The facilities were beautiful, and everyone on staff treated us so kindly. My husband and I have had plenty of hot spring stays, but this was easily our favorite. It was a wonderful time, and I’d highly recommend this ryokan. Many thanks to the staff for such thoughtful service.

The Hita river fish was a real treat, both grilled and fried, and all the meals were beautifully prepared and tasted great. We also loved having indoor and outdoor onsens in our room, so we didn’t use the public baths. Our room was spotless and the beds were comfortable. The staff were helpful and friendly, and the hospitality at Sanso Tensui was the best we’ve experienced on our many trips to Japan. We had such a magical stay and are already sure we’ll come back. Thank you to everyone we met.
