Hotel Arthur KITAHAMA BASE

I booked this hotel specifically for its advertised hot spring, but guests with tattoos aren't allowed to use it. Beppu is meant to be more open to foreigners with tattoos, which made this especially disappointing. Then, as I was packing to check out, the manager knocked at 10:01 to make sure I was leaving. Check-out was at 10:00, and I already had my bags; I was just about to walk out. This was the most unwelcoming hotel I've stayed at in Japan, and it left a bad taste. If you have tattoos, don't stay here.

Our room had no funky smell, despite comments about old carpets and rooms, and the lobby looks very modern. It seems the hotel has had some recent renovations. The central location is handy, about two minutes from the main station and ten from the bus station. There are free luggage lockers, and the ground floor has a lovely coffee shop with plenty of room to work. The receptionist was so kind and lovely.

The breakfast had a good range of choices, though the dining room can get crowded in peak season. The hotel's third-floor onsen is small but sleek and modern, a relaxing spot after exploring Beppu. The recently renovated hotel feels warm and welcoming, with the check-in desk beside a charming café. It's compact but thoughtfully designed, with stylish touches. Rooms are clean and modern, but smaller than at some other business hotels. The four-foot bed may feel tight, though the amenities are enough for a comfortable stay. With its central location and friendly hospitality, Hotel Arthur Kitahama Base is a worthwhile choice for a cozy, convenient stay in Beppu.

The staff were super nice, the onsen was great, and the rooms were clean. A very nice stay, and I'd definitely come back. Thank you.
