The riverside walk was a real highlight. Sakai River and Sakura Street are right beside the hotel, and I happened to be there when the cherry trees were in full bloom. Walking under them with locals and other visitors left a strong impression, and I’d happily come back in sakura season. I also spent a lot of time enjoying the public baths, especially the open-air onsen. The area was cared for and nicely landscaped, and the mix of warm water and fresh air made it a lovely way to relax after exploring Beppu. The hotel garden was well kept too, with seasonal scenery around it. Hotel Beppu Pastoral is away from the busy center, which gives it a quiet, traditional feel. It’s still easy to reach by public transit, though it sits a little beyond downtown. I found it a calm place to stay, particularly during cherry blossom season.

The staff were so friendly that they deserve extra credit. My room was clean and nice, and it was handy for getting to sights like the Ropeway. There’s an open-air bath too. If you’ve got luggage, I’d take a taxi from the station.

The riverside Sakura spot beside the hotel was one of the best I’ve seen. If you’re nearby during Sakura season and need a hotel, this place is worth checking out. Breakfast was great too. The room felt a little old, but it was well cleaned.

The big communal bath was quiet when I went, and its open-air section made it really comfortable. Breakfast had plenty for a family, including Ryukyu, Toriten chicken, Kyushu-style mentaiko and udon with dashi broth. It wasn’t an overly crowded spread. The building itself is old, though it’s been renovated into bedrooms. Beppu Station is a bit far away.
