J-Hoppers Beppu Guesthouse

The room was spacious, but comfort and condition felt below average. There were loose wires, no hot water at the sink, and cleanliness wasn’t great. The bathroom smelled bad and had no power outlet. The large shower area had a covered bathtub that couldn’t be used, and shower access was limited to 3pm to 11am, even for our private in-room one. The building was noisy too. The location was handy and parking was easy, a real plus if you’re driving, though the nearby streets and parking spaces are narrow. Staff were friendly and spoke good English. It sounds like renovations are planned soon, which would help. The stay was fine overall, but the room felt short on comfort.

A great hostel. The staff were so friendly, and I felt welcome right away. The shared area is roomy and comfortable, so it’s easy to meet other travelers. I met some wonderful people and had an amazing time.

The lobby’s shared guest area is charming, and the staff were wonderful and helpful. I can’t comment on the hostel’s single beds or rooms since we stayed as a group in a private room. That room was okay, but it seemed to have been used for something else before they put three beds in it. The bathroom was off-putting: it was an oversized shower room with an out-of-service onsen tub. The tub was covered with a wooden board that smelled strongly of mold. I think the place could be great for a backpacker needing a single bed.

The bunk beds here were probably the best I’ve ever slept in. They felt sturdy and didn’t squeak like the usual ones, and the top bunk had wooden stairs instead of an awkward ladder. The room was cozy and relaxing, and the whole place was clean and tidy. There are fridges, a kitchen and plenty of tables in a common area where you can eat, socialize, study or work. The staff were kind and welcoming, and we got a free ticket to the local Onsen next door. The water was insanely hot, though, so maybe not for beginners like me. Location and price are great. There’s also an elevator, and checkout is at 11 a.m. instead of the usual 10. My only small gripe is the wifi, though it was good enough for me, and I’m pretty demanding about it. I highly recommend this guesthouse!
