We parked at the ryokan, which is in a very convenient spot within walking distance of a sightseeing spot. It has only a few rooms, so it felt very private. The room was beautiful and traditional, and the futon was soft and comfortable. I was six months pregnant, but the futon didn’t bother my back at all. They were thoughtful enough to leave raw food out of my kaiseki dinner. We had a great time here, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We’ll recommend it to friends visiting Beppu!

Finding a traditional Ryokan in Japan had taken us a long time, especially after an unforgettable stay in Hakone 10 years ago. This visit, we chose Beppu for its natural hot springs, and it was the right choice. Our stay at Kappo Ryokan Kannawa Bettei was unforgettable and truly relaxing, one of the best experiences of our lives. Everything exceeded our expectations, and the friendly staff made it even more special. Toyada-san took great care of us. We had a beautiful Japanese-style room with very comfortable futons, plus two private onsens, one indoors and one open-air. The outdoor bath was peaceful and secluded among trees and bamboo sticks, and just the right size for two. There’s also a larger open-air family bath that guests can use without a reservation when it isn’t occupied. The Kaiseki dinner included Oita Wagyu steak, and breakfast was delicious. The shrimp sashimi (Ebi) and steak may have been the best I’ve ever had. Booking online is another plus, and rare for traditional Ryokans with private onsens. Even with the language barrier, communication went smoothly thanks to Sato-san, who handled our reservation.

The meals alone left us completely stuffed after both dinner and breakfast, and the room was spacious with well-kept baths and good amenities. We spent one night here at the end of a two-week trip around Japan, and it was such a peaceful, restorative way to finish. More than anything, though, the service made it worth every penny. The manager and attendant were so thoughtful and made us feel comfortable the whole time. Just wow. We’ll be back when we’re in Japan again!

We splurged on one night for our 40th wedding anniversary, and it’s easily the nicest place we’ve stayed. Having private indoor and outdoor baths was incredibly luxurious, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were warm and helpful, and even offered to take anniversary photos for us. Dinner and breakfast were both absolutely delicious. Thank you for such kind hospitality. We’ll remember this stay fondly.

The staff were all so welcoming, and the Japanese-style breakfast was lovely. After a top-notch kaiseki dinner, we went right back to the private onsen. There were indoor and outdoor pools on our room’s terrace, and the whole setting felt calm and relaxing. It may have been expensive, but the private onsen made it worth it. Our best experience in Japan so far, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting a real ryokan stay.
