Onsen Inn Hamayu Nagi - Vacation STAY 81905

The customer service was bad. They wouldn't let me cancel my booking even though I had Corona. Since this is a kind of shared house with a shared onsen, I felt that staying there could put everyone else at risk.

The shared kitchen was a nice spot to talk with other guests, and it had a big fridge plus cupboards of dishes and cups. There were also a microwave, kettle, toaster oven, and rice cooker, though running appliances together tripped the breaker. Cutlery was scarce, so bringing spoons would help. I stayed at Onsenyado Hamayu Nagi for two nights in March 2025. The hostel is a little worn, but comfortable, handy for visiting Beppu, and well priced. Our private room had two futons and a private bathroom. I found the futon comfortable, though we usually sleep on futons. The lobby had a cotton candy machine, a cork shooting range, and a small onsen bath. I had the bath to myself, which was lovely. Towels weren't provided.

We volunteered here in exchange for a free stay and were assigned to clean the rooms. We were told the duvets aren't washed between guests. They only use a lint roller to pick up hairs and spray them with fabric scent. I find that disgusting, and I'd be mortified to have paid to stay here. If basic cleanliness matters to you, I'd stay somewhere else.

It's cheap, and you can borrow bicycles for free. The place is a bit run-down, but the onsen stays open all night. There's a gaming room too, so I'd recommend it for a budget stay, anyone who enjoys cycling around, or families with kids.
