Yamada Bessou has a lovely garden and just three rooms, which gives the place a special, peaceful feel. The service is warm and welcoming, the city noise fades away, and the comfortable futons made for a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was heartwarming: local rice with deep orange raw eggs, grilled fish, and tsukemono. The house dates to 1930 and is full of nostalgia, with western-style rooms including a parlour with a bow window and a tea room, alongside a maze of Japanese-style rooms with engawa, sliding doors, and tatami floors. There are separate indoor baths for men and women, plus a cozy open-air bath with mandarins floating in the hot water. The carefully kept zen garden, intricate tile roofs, and old photos and belongings of the great grandfather who came from Hiroshima all add to the atmosphere. His things decorate an upright piano. Laughter echoes through the rooms. It feels like a soothing place suspended in time, a lazy bubble not ready to burst. Why leave?

It’s in a handy spot between Beppu station and Beppu Tower, with easy access by bus or train. Our traditional-looking room was perfect, and we had an amazing stay. We also used the private onsen the next morning.

We only came for the onsen, and it was lovely. The bath is beautifully maintained, and the family who run the hotel were incredibly kind and welcoming. We regretted booking a large hotel nearby instead of staying here. We’ll choose this place next time.

Breakfast was a highlight, beautifully presented and delicious, with a lovely mix of local flavors and seasonal ingredients. The onsen were fantastic too, especially the peaceful outdoor bath surrounded by nature. Yamada Bessou is a family-run ryokan with a long history. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome with warm hospitality and kind attention to detail. You can tell the Okami, the landlady of a Ryokan, is devoted to giving guests a pleasant stay. Our rooms were spotless, cozy, and full of charm, just what you’d hope for in a traditional ryokan experience. For a serene, authentic stay in Beppu, I highly recommend Yamada Bessou. It was a wonderful visit, and I can’t wait to come back someday.

Staying at this classic, beautiful Ryokan made our visit to Beppu even better. It’s a wonderful destination in its own right, and this was a unique experience in Japan. The staff are earnest and friendly. The men’s and women’s baths are a lovely way to start and end the day, and the outdoor private bath was exceptionally good. I’d highly recommend it and will definitely return.
