HOTEL R9 The Yard Buzen

The receptionist was really friendly, and I liked how quiet the room stayed without noise coming through from next door. I found a discounted rate for R9 while looking online. There were Jomo and Nakatsu locations nearby, but I picked this one since it’s set back from the main road. If you’re checking in late after a busy day like I was, bring food with you because there aren’t any convenience stores or supermarkets close by. With more time, though, there are plenty of restaurants by the station for a good meal.

I’ve stayed at other R9 locations, and this room was clean and well kept too. The sink was the problem: even with the water at a moderate level, it often backed up. Maybe the drain strainer’s shape is to blame, but I hope they’ll fix it. Checkout morning wasn’t much better. While I was putting my bags in the car outside my room, a cleaner started to pass by. They seemed to notice me watching and gave a quiet, reluctant “Good morning” just before leaving. Other staff, including someone who went to the room two doors down, didn’t acknowledge me at all. They respond to positive comments here, but not to critical ones like mine. I think that’s something to consider carefully.

My stay was December 1, 2025, from 6:10 PM until checkout at 8:30 AM the next day. I was in Buzen City for a business trip and paid 4,800 yen including tax. I’d booked ahead, checked in at the front desk, paid by credit card in advance (cash is accepted too), and got a breakfast voucher. The desk closes from 11 PM until 7 AM. If you get there before it closes, you can take the frozen, ration-style breakfast back with you. From outside, the much-discussed container hotel looks big, but inside it feels cozy. There’s still enough room for a regular business hotel stay, and the basic essentials are provided. Amenities and gowns are at the front desk. They don’t have women’s items like makeup remover, cotton balls, or lotion, and there are only a limited number of gowns, so it’s first come, first served (lol). Breakfast is kept in the freezer case at the desk. There were five options, including bento boxes and noodles. I chose the European-style curry rice, which was just average, neither good nor bad. Free drinks are there too: coffee, green tea bags, and two kinds of herbal tea. There’s also a 7-Eleven about a five-minute walk away. Behind the front desk is a separate laundry building with four coin-operated drum machines, open until midnight. A Coca-Cola vending machine is in the neighboring building. Neither building has a change machine, so you’ll need to ask the front desk to exchange money before doing laundry. Checkout is easy, just leave the key in the mailbox by the front desk entrance. Paying in advance makes sense. The room has a few bare-bones details. You have to go to the entrance to switch the lights on or off, and there’s no brightness control. The lock is an ordinary key you insert and turn, not a card key or auto-lock, so you need to lock the door after entering. There are only a few outlets: one by the bed and two each on the desk and at its foot. There’s free WiFi, but no wired LAN. The TV monitor has an HDMI port, though no cable is supplied. For the price, I found it sufficient and acceptable despite those limitations. It seems about right for an overnight business trip.

Having a private room made for a quiet, comfortable stay. It was also really handy to park right outside and bring my luggage straight in.
