Guest House Nishiki - Hostel

The hosts were so friendly, and this is a great base for hiking and enjoying nature. I’ll be back. One thing to know: the last bus from chichibu gets to the hostel 20 minutes before check-in, so if it’s raining, be prepared to wait outside. The hosts do offer a lift from the nearby town, which I should have taken.

The food was delicious and very affordable, and the owner was so kind. We went to the wrong station, but they still picked us up and drove us to the best onsen in the area. It’s a beautiful home, and I’ll definitely come back. Thank you so much for everything ♥️

We came in late spring, when the foothills were covered in fresh green leaves and purple wisteria, and there are trails nearby. The owners set a table outside so we could enjoy the hill views at dinner and breakfast, even though our humble room had no view and was a bit noisy because of the thin walls. The meals were simple, filling, and delicious, and they brought us fresh hot coffee after breakfast, which we loved. This cozy, 120-year-old guesthouse makes a good overnight stop after hiking or cycling. I’d recommend it to young, adventurous travelers looking for a local, authentic experience.

There isn’t a lot to do nearby, but that hardly matters when you’re in the mountains, looking out at a gorgeous view and keeping warm under the kotatsu with delicious Japanese cuisine. The host was laid-back and helpful, and the place has a rustic, traditional feel. Follow the common-sense rules and be respectful, and you should have a great time. Prices are very reasonable, and it’s a lovely place to relax in the Japanese countryside.
