After a short stay, we were already thinking we’d come back, maybe in fall or winter. I took an early walk to Tateshina waterfalls, about a kilometer away, and we got lucky seeing spotted deer cross the road and pass behind the property. There were lots of colorful birds too. Breakfast was delicious, with fresh ingredients and homemade bread. We’d brought South Indian filter coffee, and Sen-san kindly brewed it for us, so we shared a cup after breakfast. We live in Tokyo and had meant to visit nomanomori for ages. We usually go to the busier parts of Nagano, like Hakuba, but found the Chino area had plenty of quiet spots along the Venus line road and surprisingly few visitors. When Sen-san greeted us with a big smile and Tamil, the language of my hometown, Chennai, we knew the stay would be special. She’s lively and gave us a tour of the property. Her Tamil, English, and Japanese are all excellent. We met her husband, Taka-san, and learned they run the place themselves. The care they put into maintaining it is easy to see, from the thoughtful decor and lighting to how clean every corner is. Our room was spacious, and the private bath was just what we needed after a tiring day. At dinner we tried some of Taka-san’s local Sake and had long, relaxed conversations with our hosts about all kinds of things.

We loved winding down on the outdoor patio in the evening, just sitting and taking in the smell of the woods. The location won us over, and we hope to come back in another season. The hosts were welcoming and kind, our room was spotless and cozy, and the place is surrounded by lovely trees and nature. We even saw deer nearby. Breakfast was such a lovely start to the day, really delicious and put together with care.

Snow came on our second day, and the property and surrounding woods looked magical under the white blanket. We even spotted a deer making its way through the snow. Breakfast was a highlight too, with homemade food and coffee that made us feel warm and at home. We hear summer is beautiful there, and hope to return to get away from Tokyo’s heat. Nomanomori feels special, tucked deep in the mountains and forests of Nagano, yet only about a 30-minute drive from Chino Station, which is easy to reach from Tokyo. The proprietors were incredibly welcoming and accommodating to different needs. They clearly care about making sure guests have a good stay. It’s a lovely place to slow down and spend a few days in the mountains.

The hosts were wonderful, and we spent hours chatting with them. It really felt like being at home, and we’d happily return. We chose to have dinner at the property even though there are other options outside. It was simple and good, while breakfast was outstanding, made with local produce. The inn has a distinctive interior, and its spot right on the famous Venus line is lovely. On a cold evening, the fireplace and nearby bar were just right. There’s also an outdoor platform with seating, which isn’t so common in Japan. The recently renovated hot bath area was clean and spacious.

We spent a lot of time relaxing on the terrace, reading, watching birds in the trees, and occasionally seeing deer run through the forest. It was a perfect cool summer escape, and we’ll be back soon. Taka and Sen are warm, welcoming owners. Sen is from Chennai in India and has lived in Japan for 20 years. She speaks Japanese and English fluently. The rooms were well equipped and exceptionally clean. We looked forward to breakfast outdoors on the terrace each morning, generous but still healthy. Sen adds little touches from South Indian cooking, like a hint of cumin in soup or a fried snack. She and Taka are both very skilled cooks.
