Kyukamura Shikotsuko

We only stayed one night, but we already loved the place and would happily come back on our next visit. The room was really spacious, the staff were amazing, nice, and friendly, and both breakfast and dinner were excellent. We’d recommend staying here to everyone.

We couldn’t spot the famed Shimaenaga, though there are bird feeders outside the dining area and binoculars to watch for them. We were here during the fall foliage, with lovely views of Lake Shikotsu. The staff were helpful, friendly, and courteous, and most spoke English well. Rooms were clean and spacious. The bath left my skin silky smooth, and there were salt scrubs, several shampoo brands, and after-bath lotions, toners, and serums. Meals were great, including shabu for dinner and the best croissants for breakfast. There was plenty of variety, so you wouldn’t get bored over a few nights. One thing to know: rooms have a toilet and sink but no shower or bath. You need to use the communal bath, but when I went a few times, it was empty.

The hotel’s surroundings are amazing in autumn. The rooms feel a bit dated, but they’re comfortable. The room got too hot from the central heating, and there was no way to adjust the temperature. Opening the window was the only option, though you had to leave the grille on to keep bugs out.

The grounds are beautiful, with several walking trails for birdwatching or heading into town. In town, you can rent bikes or canoes, or visit the visitor center. It’s a lovely ryokan in the national park, with excellent meals, comfortable rooms, and very helpful, friendly staff. I’d love to come back.
