The meals were paced well, and both the eight-course dinner and Japanese breakfast were delicious and just the right size. We paid well over $500, but with the setting and everything included, it felt worth every coin and then some. Suimeikaku is right by the lake and close to shops, good hikes, and the Shikotsu Ice Festival grounds. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and professional in both the concierge area and dining room. I could manage in Japanese, and I also heard a staff member speaking English easily with guests who couldn't. I think there are about 12 rooms, maybe a little more, and every one faces west over the lake, so you can catch the sunset over Shikotsu. The wooden and stone outdoor baths also face west, and you can reserve an hour to have one to yourselves with your significant other. If you're in Chitose or Lake Shikotsu, this ryokan is a wonderful place for a romantic weekend. Honestly, five stars doesn't feel like enough. I'd give Suimeikaku ten if I could do that without throwing off the rating scale.

The service over our two days was excellent, and having a drink on the outside terrace at sunset was lovely. The lake view from the room was great, and the room's own onsen also looked straight out onto the water. You can book the outdoor onsens at check-in, and those have lovely views too. Breakfast was one of the best Japanese breakfasts I've had. The Italian dinner was the less successful part of the weekend for me: there were a lot of plates, and the dishes felt too basic, like simple home cooking. Still, it's an awesome place for a weekend stay.

We loved looking out at the lake from our spacious, clean, comfortable room, which had its own onsen. The dining room has a fantastic view too, and stepping out the front door at sunrise or sunset put the beautiful, peaceful lake right there in front of us. We weren't sure what to expect from a hotel with only eight rooms, but we were pleasantly surprised. They picked us up at the bus stop, which was especially helpful in winter. The place isn't fancy, just quietly elegant, and every room faces the lake. Both our Italian dinner and Japanese breakfast were delicious. Excellent service, too.

The restaurant looks out over the lake, and dinner is Italian-Japanese style while breakfast is Japanese. It's a peaceful spot for a short retreat, not far from Chitose city or the airport. A nice place to rest before or after travelling around the rest of Hokkaido.

We had a great view, good service, and a convenient location. Dinner is an Italian-style course featuring a range of Hokkaido ingredients, and breakfast comes with freshly cooked rice. Don't miss the private terrace with free champagne, just ask reception how to get access. You can get there by public bus from Shinchitose airport or Chitose station. If you give them your arrival time ahead of time, they can pick you up at Shikotsuko bus station. We flew out of Shinchotose airport the next day and took the bus there, which took 57 minutes. It worked well as a destination before or after a stay in Sapporo.
