What stayed with us most was the kindness. We came by train, and the day after our stay they escorted us to a nearby observation deck. They also went out of their way to bring over things we’d forgotten. I imagine it’s run by a gentle couple, with the wife making delicious meals. It reminded me why I prefer lodges to hotels. My wife and I stayed here on our first trip to Choshi. The pension opened in 1989, so the building and facilities are a bit old, but the basics are there and it was comfortable enough for a room-only stay. Our room faced the ocean. We couldn’t see the sun rise over the horizon that time of year, but on a clear morning the early light reflected beautifully on the water. The meals included fish and meat mains and original dishes using locally grown vegetables. We especially liked the cream soup at breakfast, and appreciated that they accommodated our request for a drink that wasn’t on the menu. We paid extra for the private bath, which had a tub and washing area big enough for a family of three or four. It wasn’t luxurious, but we could relax there for an hour.
