What bothered me most was how unfriendly the young woman at the bakery was. I’m a big Chateraise fan, and that’s why I picked this hotel over other hot spring hotels in town. After this, I probably won’t buy anything from Chateraise again. The voucher I got at check-in was for an item from the bakery on the second floor. Online reviews had led me to think it could be exchanged for a slice of cake, and the cakes looked amazing. But the bakery staff seemed confused when I tried to redeem it, then asked me to pay for the cake I’d chosen. I refused and went to reception to check. The older gentleman at the front desk didn’t speak English either, but kindly went to the bakery and redeemed it for me. It turned out the voucher was only for an apple pie, which looked more like a pastry than a cake. Very disappointing. Maybe the check-in staff hadn’t explained it properly, so I had the wrong expectations from the reviews online. Check-in itself was bizarre. The front desk staff didn’t speak English, and after we finished talking, he didn’t hand over the room key. It was awkward, and only after a few minutes did they realize I was trying to check in. Because of the confusion, no one told me about the hotel facilities like the public hot springs or open-air baths, so I had to figure them out myself. The room was small and the hotel overall felt outdated. A very disappointing stay.

The service was efficient and friendly, with smiles. The onsen water felt smooth, warm, and around pH 9, with a slight H2S smell. There are three baths that rotate between male and female guests. We had a small en-suite room with a sofa and two beds. Cleanliness was passable. The toilet seemed fairly new, but the basin and bathtub were quite old. Free wine and crackers are available at reception from 3pm, though there’s no lounge where you can sit and enjoy them.

The room was okay, though a bit smoky. What made it hard to sleep was the hotel’s location by a busy road, with noisy bikers going past for most of the night. Then construction all over the hotel started first thing in the morning, something the website hadn’t advertised. As a light sleeper, I found it torturous.

The private onsen is too small.

I forgot my towel once while going to the open-air bath, and had to walk back to the room for it. Towels are only kept in the guest rooms, so it’d be nice if some were available at the bath. The bath itself was relaxing and enjoyable. The suite was huge and amazing, with a private bath, sauna, and even a karaoke room. It felt special and was a great place to relax with family. We had a wonderful, luxurious stay at Fujinoya Yutei. From arrival, the staff treated us like VIPs. The people who carried our bags and showed us to the room were kind and professional, and explained the facilities, meal times, and everything else carefully. We felt very welcome and comfortable. The teppanyaki dinner was one of the best parts. Chef Miyakawa was skilled, professional, and entertaining. The domestic beef steak was cooked just right, and the whole meal was delicious, from the appetizer platter to grilled vegetables and dessert. You could feel the care and quality in every dish. From 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM, there were all-you-can-eat snacks and drinks, including wine. I enjoyed orange juice while relaxing in the lounge. We were already full from the snacks, so we saved the welcome cake for checkout day. It came with one drink and was a nice touch from the hotel. Breakfast was traditional Japanese style, with lots of small dishes, including their famous tamagoyaki and natto. It’s not my personal preference, but the quality was still very good. My Japanese husband, grandma, and grandpa all enjoyed it a lot. It was a memorable, relaxing stay with lovely facilities, great food, and outstanding hospitality. We’d definitely love to come back.
