Shoji Lake Hotel

Shoji Lake Hotel is in a quiet, somewhat remote location and looks a little old-fashioned. What stayed with me most was the hospitality. The owner, Mr. Kobayashi, took time to explain the landscape and how the views of Mt. Fuji change. He apologized sincerely for the hotel’s age and simple facilities, though his care meant much more to us than modern decor. He even grilled bread for each guest in the morning, then shook our hands and said goodbye when we left. From the room, on a clear day, Mt. Fuji reflects on the lake like a painting. You can also make out Aokigahara forest and a dramatic band of dark volcanic rock formed by eruptions more than 1,200 years ago. The scenery feels peaceful and powerful at once. It has the genuine, thoughtful feel of an older generation of innkeepers. If you care more about the views and heartfelt hospitality than flashy new amenities, you’ll love Shoji Lake Hotel.

My family of ten stayed for one night and were lucky to wake up to a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji. Mr. Kobayashi is a second-generation hotelier, over 70 years old, and his passion for the hotel is still obvious. He told us many thoughtful stories about its history and his lifelong dedication to it. This isn’t a conventional luxury hotel, but the experience touched us deeply. For an authentic, traditional Japanese stay, I highly recommend visiting. The hospitality feels worth far more than the price.

The highlight is the setting. Waking up to Mount Fuji directly outside your room is an amazing experience. Shoji Lake sits beside the smallest of the five Fujigoko lakes, and the rooms are comfortable and fairly spacious. The outdoor areas were refreshing, especially in winter, and the service was amazing. Mr. Kobayashi, the owner, and the staff were very accommodating, and he shared plenty of local knowledge with guests. Dinner was simple but just right on a chilly evening. If you’re a fan of the hit show The Hot Spot, Shoji Lake is a must visit. The Yamazaki konbini around the bend, the bench, and the main locations are all there to see.

We loved the traditional Japanese style and the quiet atmosphere. The views were unmatched, especially from the rooftop lounge. We went in April and could see both Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms. Each guest gets traditional Japanese pajamas and slippers for indoors. My boyfriend and I don’t speak Japanese, but translating on our phones worked fine. When we wanted to go sightseeing, the staff checked the bus schedule and gave us accurate times in both directions. They also suggested some lovely places to visit and eat. I’d absolutely recommend staying here if you want a traditional experience.
