I’ve been glamping around Japan a lot, and this is one of my worst stays so far. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the view was pretty good, but the rooms were only average. For glamping, I expect it to feel more luxurious. Here, it felt more like camping. Rooms, service and location got decent scores from me, but these things were deal breakers. I stayed in mid Jun 2025, and everyone in my party got bitten by insects. We were still itching a week later. At a similar price, most glamping places have a toilet and shower next to the dome. Here the toilet is a shared facility a little farther away, and the communal shower by reception was lackluster. If you don’t like bugs, this probably isn’t the place for you, especially in summer. There was a cricket in the women’s toilet near my tent, then a big moth started flapping around while I was using it. That isn’t the staff’s fault, but it comes with shared facilities where doors are left open. The glass dining room has a lovely view over Mt. Fuji, which is a real plus, but on a hot summer night the grill beside it makes the room smoky and too hot to eat in unless you open the glass doors. With the doors open, all sorts of bugs fly in. I ended up eating in the dome. With this setup, I think it might only be comfortable to eat there from Oct to Nov. The view seems to draw a lot of tourists. The evening was quiet, and I barely noticed other guests, but at 7am the next morning a group of tourists were talking loudly like they owned the place. I’m done glamping in this area and won’t be back.

The staff were nice, but the tents aren’t all the same. We were unlucky and felt ripped off by the one we got. The photo of the view says it all. I don’t think management is being honest by renting out this tent. Be careful to book one of the nicer tents near reception, not the ones in the car park.

Dinner was amazing, and the room was clean. They called us a cab in the morning so we could leave the mountain. The hot tub time is limited to 50 minutes, with two types included at no extra cost; larger options for groups are available for a fee. Rooms are assigned first come, first served. I only stayed once, but I think some have a better angle for seeing Fuji. It was cloudy during our visit, unfortunately, so we’ll have to come back.

We got lucky with fantastic weather, which helped make this one of my best experiences in Japan. The tent had great facilities, including electricity, heat, and a hot pot, and the private onsen was fantastic. The staff at Shakushiyama Gateway Camp were friendly and helpful the whole time. They even offered complimentary drinks at check-in, which I hadn’t expected, and were happy to help with anything we asked. My friends keep asking me about the details, and I’m looking forward to visiting again. Thank you to the staff!

The night view from this mountainside campsite is amazing. When the sky is clear, you can see Mt. Fuji too. The bathrooms were kept clean, and there’s a great open-air bathtub you can use for free. You can pay to have the campsite prepare BBQ ingredients, or drive down the mountain to buy food at a supermarket.
