The meals at Hidejirō (Hidejirō) were generous and especially good because the owner grows the delicious, chewy white rice himself. He offers vegetarian food without strong seasonings like onion or garlic. We had fried spring rolls with soybean pulp, perilla, and cheese, scrambled eggs with spinach and sesame oil, broccoli and cauliflower soup, and baked milk for dessert. The owner is charming and fun. He used to work at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, and after retiring he learned to play the saw, which he plays very well. If you’re vegetarian and get the chance to visit Kyoto, I’d absolutely recommend spending a night at this farmhouse inn.

The mountain views are beautiful, especially the sunrise, and the inn sits in a refreshing spot surrounded by mountains. I spent one night here on a solo trip. The owner runs the place alone, but the interior is lovely and comfortable. There are two tatami rooms divided by a sliding door, which would work well for a family. The bath was clean and easy to use. Wi-Fi is available; you’ll need to ask the owner for the password. Dinner was a tasty mountain-style meal, with chicken and boiled fish as side dishes. Breakfast had plenty of variety too, including fried eggs, sausages, tofu, natto, miso soup, and more. The main drawback is parking. The inn is up on a rise, reached by a slope about one car wide. You have to park just behind the owner’s car on the left side of the slope, as close to the road’s width as possible, since you can’t block the public road. It’s a tight squeeze. If you’re driving, a kei car or regular passenger car of around 1 ton is best. Larger vehicles like wagons or sedans risk a wheel slipping off or scraping, so take care. The owner mentioned that wild boar meat might be available, though it isn’t guaranteed. Ask well ahead of time, since it takes time to prepare and can’t be arranged just before or during your stay. The place was featured on George Tokoro’s show “Japan Darts Journey,” and the owner appeared on TV as well.

Making soba was a great experience, and Hidejiro’s versatility helped make it fun. The soba tasted delicious!
