Hotel Tenryukaku

The hotel is older, but the hospitality is good, and the spa was nice.

I wouldn't recommend this place to people from outside the prefecture. The hot springs get extremely noisy, often because you run into driving school students, especially in the men's bath. The sinks and hair dryers in the large bath end up unusable. Dinner seems aimed at locals, with lots of salty dishes that feel more like snacks to go with alcohol. The guests are roughly 40% driving school trainees, 40% locals, and 20% regular tourists. There are thoughtful touches, like a choice of amenities, and although the facilities are old, they're well maintained and free of dust. Still, it was simply uncomfortable for someone from outside the prefecture.

I stayed on a floor with a smoking room, and the cigarette smell was awful, reaching the hallway and even the entrance. The building is old, so the long walking routes probably can't be helped. The staff were all very kind, and I think it's good that they try to make up for the age of the place with the food and hot springs. But the room wasn't cleaned properly, with cobwebs on the lights. I really wish they'd do something about the cigarettes.
