GUEST HOUSE TOKAI NAGARAGAWA - Hostel

We booked through AirBnB for one night in April 2025, a group of four. One of us was running a marathon the next day, so we didn't have many alternatives. If you're driving, be aware that a large car won't fit down the narrow lane to the parking area. The AirBnB listing described a room with six bunk beds. Those beds were there, but apparently too many beds had been booked, so we were put in the neighboring office building instead. The mattresses were paper thin over wooden slats, and even with the air conditioning running all night, the oversized space stayed freezing. We did have the whole large room to ourselves, and each bed had its own power outlet. We could use the actual guesthouse next door: its toilet had a Japanese washlet but no hand soap, the shower looked clean, and the kitchenette had a microwave, fridge, and yakan hot water dispenser but no cups. The staff were really kind. They moved their car when we arrived early and let us keep parking after checkout. My complaint is that we paid the same 4000yen as other guests without getting the same comfort or what the listing promised. If this arrangement is possible, it should be explained in the listing so people can choose where they'll sleep.

It's peaceful and quiet, though it's about a 20-minute bus ride from the city center.

We booked a dorm room but the owner put us in a filthy apartment downtown. The dorms themselves are okay, but it felt like we were being ripped off as soon as we arrived. The owner was a disaster. Avoid this place.

The place felt like a standard dormitory, and it wasn't as bad as some reviews suggest. The parking area is pretty cramped, so I wouldn't bring a family car. They lend you a towel at no charge, though mine was slightly damp.
