The meal set was the one thing I really enjoyed. If the food hadn’t been good, I’d have had nothing positive to say, especially for what I paid. The price was far higher than other places I’ve stayed, and those cheaper places were usually very good, so I expected more here. Instead, the room felt old and smelled musty, and the bathroom was in such bad shape I didn’t feel comfortable staying in it for long. I didn’t dare try the onsen either. There seemed to be so much dust that I woke with a headache, and it was hard to sleep through the night.

I’m giving one star because zero wasn’t an option. Their website didn’t work, and we called 30 times to cancel but got no answer. In the end we went there out of our way just to explain in person, and they were furious. The place didn’t look like the photos, either, and the woman spoke to us rudely.

Dinner and breakfast were well worth the extra cost. The food was great, and there aren’t many restaurants open in town at night. We had the family room, which had enough space for 3-4 people, and it was quiet, clean, and comfortable. The hotel is a little run down, but it had a lovely homely feel, and the staff were attentive and very helpful. It’s an old Ryokan style place, apparently family (?) operated, with shared wash rooms (baths) only. It’s right by the bus terminal, in the center of town and at the foot of Gujo castle. We’d stay here again when we come back.

For a very low price, you can stay in Gujō-Hachiman at this simple, old ryokan. A few facilities could use some cleaning and renewal, but generally you get what you pay for.

I was glad to find I could book online on the same day. I chose breakfast, and the sweet simmered ayu (sweetfish) was delicious. It’s a charming, simple inn with an old-fashioned feel, though anyone expecting everything to be spotless may want to look elsewhere.
