The outdoor private onsen in our spacious room was relaxing and had a lovely beach view. The manager gave us a warm welcome and explained everything in English, including the free happy-hour drinks. Dinner and breakfast were excellent Yamaguchi-style kaiseki, with fresh seafood, seasonal dishes and beautiful presentation. Some of the best meals we had in Japan. We stayed one night at Hagi Ichirin and another at its sister hotel, Mihagi, and loved both. The location is great, just a 5-7 minute walk to Hagi Castle ruins, the historic castle town, and the birthplaces of Meiji Restoration heroes Takasugi Shinsaku and Kido Takayoshi. I’d happily recommend Hagi Ichirin or Mihagi next door. We’ll definitely be back.

The hotel is right beside an amazing beach, but a fence they put up blocks access to it. It feels like they don't appreciate how unique the location is.
