Daikokuya Ryokan

I came for the onsen day use. The water is great, especially if you’re experienced with traditional Japanese onsens. It’s an old hotel, so some facilities are dated. There’s one large tub that fits up to 6 people, and the changing area is small. The onsen and towel rental cost ¥550+¥100.

The changing room could use a more thorough clean. There was dust on the air conditioner and mold in the corners and behind the baskets, which made me uncomfortable. The small, old hot spring itself was a good high-temperature bath that warmed me right through. I also liked how few customers there were. It felt quiet and peaceful, like a hidden gem. The water is good, and I’d have enjoyed the visit more if the cleaning were better. Anyone particular about cleanliness should know this beforehand.

I found somewhere to stay late that night and booked a room-only plan. It was a good deal, and I was very satisfied. Check-in was smooth, thanks to the friendly, helpful staff. Guests get rice crackers, and I found it amusing that they said eating them before bathing might be good for your health. I like little things like that, so it made me happy. The clean, spacious room is Japanese style, with a safe, TV, refrigerator, toothbrush, razor, bath towel, and face towel. The bathroom and toilet are together, but there’s quite a bit of space. This is a Japanese-style hot spring inn. Since it’s Yunokawa Onsen, I had high hopes for the bath. The water is colorless and odorless, slightly salty, smooth, and gentle on the skin. It warms you quickly and holds heat well. It seemed relaxing and good for fatigue recovery and beautiful skin. Hakodate’s Yunokawa Onsen is a famous, long-established hot spring area with abundant water, and I thought the spring was very high quality. There’s only one large bath, no other baths or facilities, and it’s quite hot. It could feel awkward with a large group, but I was happy with the bath on its own. Day-use bathing is available from 6am to midnight, which is a big plus. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and a hairdryer are provided, but there’s nowhere to put valuables, so keep that in mind. I’d like to come back.
