Gora Kansuiro

We were let down after expecting a lot from this place, especially for the price. The rooms badly need renovation, and the private onsen room looked shabby. The meal came in several courses, but nearly everything was very traditional. I understand this is a Japanese onsen resort, but with so many foreign tourists, I’d have expected a little updating. The flavors and textures were so unfamiliar to us that we ended up walking to the convenience store for dinner. I’m not happy with what we spent on this stay.

The morning air at the open air bath was so fresh, and I felt completely at peace there. I preferred it to the private onsen, though we enjoyed both. Our room, Yuri, was gorgeous, quiet, and peaceful, and the ryokan is perfectly located, about a minute’s walk from the train into Gora and the one that takes you to the ropeway. Everyone, from the people who welcomed us to the dining staff, was thoughtful and welcoming. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, and I got to try things I’d never had before. Dinner was a bit too much food for me personally. Our family had an unforgettable experience at Gora Kansuirou. I’d happily book this inn again the next time I’m in Hakone. The food was seasonal, filling, and delicious, with exceptional attention to flavor, detail, and presentation. Dinner and breakfast meant we didn’t need to look for food in town. Staff were welcoming and accommodating, including with our food allergies. After days of walking tens of thousands of steps in Tokyo, the private “onsen” bath was just what we needed. The staff provided indoor slippers and explained the ryokan and bedrooms. It’s a short walk from Gora train station, with just a little hill to walk down after crossing the railroad tracks. Our stay at Gora Kansuiro was relaxing and special. If we get the chance to visit Hakone again, we’d choose it again.

The location is wonderful, and the area around the ryokan is beautiful. The staff were excellent and very welcoming. I might come back if the property got some updating. It’s a very traditional place, but the rooms smell of mildew, and there are cracks in the walls, ceilings, and bath area. The meals were multi-course Japanese food at dinner and breakfast. A lot of the courses weren’t for me. There were many different flavors and textures, some good and many bad.
