The staff were really friendly and helpful, which made our stay at Hakonowa Hakone welcoming. The burger place downstairs was a fun extra, good for a quick bite or casual meal. It’s a basic, clean option for a short stay if you’re fine with limited space: our room was small and simple, the toilet is shared, and there’s a little bath in the basement. The location is handy for exploring Hakone, though there’s a walk from the station, something to consider with heavy luggage. It felt a bit expensive for what you get, but was still comfortable and convenient overall.

The staff made this place feel special from the moment we arrived from Tokyo by train and walked over. It was such a warm welcome, and the little boutique hotel felt tranquil and charming. My boyfriend and I stayed in June 2024, and it was easily our favorite stop on our two-week Japan trip. It’s a three-bedroom home converted into a boutique hotel, so it was quiet and had an authentic ryokan feel. Our room was a good size, with lovely views through floor-to-ceiling windows, and the tatami mats were comfortable. We enjoyed the amenities, especially the basement onsen, which suited one or two people, and the delicious Box Burger restaurant attached. Town and a bus stop for getting around the mountain town were both within walking distance. I highly recommend this dreamy, peaceful place for a unique stay.

The onsen was really nice, and you can reserve it once a day. There’s a burger restaurant on the ground floor that you should definitely try, and bus stops are just a three-minute walk away. Great staff and a fantastic central Hakone location. Highly recommend.

We arrived early, but the staff kindly welcomed us and kept our bags while the room was being cleaned, so we could go out without carrying them. The inn is an intimate little hidden gem, with a spacious room and a lovely Japanese atmosphere. We ate at Box Burger downstairs and definitely recommend it. Thanks to the staff for a great stay and meal. We’d stay here again if we return to Hakone.
