Good value for the money, and they’ve clearly put effort into keeping the price reasonable while offering a range of ingredients from the Shimanto River. The rice was the one letdown. I understand rice is expensive, but I’d happily pay for refills if it meant getting tasty rice. That would make the meal more satisfying.

We had a great time chatting with everyone, who were so kind and welcoming. The little shrimp and three eels in the tank were adorable, too. Dinner was delicious, with Kochi specialties including seared bonito, eel, salt-grilled natural sweetfish from the Shimanto River, and Tosa beef cooked on a ceramic plate. The rice and side dishes were good, and we cleaned our plates. Our room was clean and had its own three-piece unit bathroom, and the spacious family bath was relaxing, with great shower pressure. We were surprised by the price, especially for the Obon holiday. The location, right by the Shimanto River and near the Sada Submersible Bridge, was fantastic. We’d hoped to see the stars, but it was cloudy. Staying at "Minshuku: Shimanto Riverside" on the second day of our Kochi trip was a great choice. I’d highly recommend this guesthouse and would love to come back if I’m near Shimanto again. Thank you!
Dinner had lots of local flavor: seared bonito, salt-grilled sweetfish from the Shimanto River, Tosa beef on a teppanyaki grill, and even fried moray eel, which was something different. The rice was grown in Kochi, and they seem to focus on local ingredients. The young proprietress also gave us plenty of helpful tourist information. Our room had a modular bath, and there was also an outdoor bath with a nice handmade feel. This minshuku sits right along the Shimanto River, with a lovely view from the grounds. The scrub forest in front has been cleared as part of a corporate effort to open up the view. We stayed at Minshuku Shimanto River Side on the first day of our Kochi trip, and it was a great choice. Highly recommended for a Shimanto visit. We’ll be back.
The room and amenities don’t measure up to a business hotel, but that didn’t matter much to me since I was only there to sleep. The view of the Shimanto River from the window makes the stay worthwhile, and the famous sinking bridge is close by.
I’ve been staying in Shimanto City for more than twenty years, and this was the best service I’ve had. I was there for work, but it was easy to get back to the inn quickly and enjoy the outdoors. Looking out at the Shimanto River from the window is stunning, with so many wild birds around. You can get a taste of camping by a remote mountain river while staying in an air-conditioned room. Cross the road and go down to the riverbank, and it feels like a different world. I’ve visited the Shimanto River and rivers all over Japan many times, but this place felt unlike anywhere else. The mist at sunrise is especially beautiful, hard to put into words. You can experience that kind of nature without heavy gear, climbing into steep, deep water, or putting up with more than a little cold. The rooms are clean and the food is delicious. The tsugani (?) miso soup is the best in Kochi. It’s amazing they’ve kept such normal accommodation facilities in this natural setting. I’ve finally found a place in Shikoku that makes me want to come back. Thank you! If you mainly care about room price, you may not agree with me, and comparing a guesthouse with a hotel makes no sense.
