The room at Rikyuan felt cozy and comfortable, with a traditional look, though maybe a little dated. There wasn’t a sofa to lounge on during the day, which some Western visitors may miss, but that’s part of the experience. I had a great time in this quieter part of Hakone, with several activities within walking distance. The innkeepers and staff gave top notch service.

My wife and I spent one night in a room with a private onsen, and it was memorable. We slept really well on the comfortable mats, and the ryokan staff were super friendly and helpful. Both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were delicious. We’d also recommend the shiatsu massage.

They welcomed us with green tea and bean cake, and served everything in our room, which I loved. The atmosphere was calming, and the onsen was nice and toasty.
