We paid ahead for meals, but on the second night they ran out of the only vegetarian option for my partner. The chef was in a bad mood and wouldn't make her another dish or even substitute something. The shared kitchen wasn't much cleaner. The male showers were disgusting, with one central drain serving three showers, while the women's showers didn't offer enough privacy. In our room, the walls were so thin we could hear everything, including people downstairs in the bar late at night. The mattresses were uncomfortable, and the protectors and blankets felt dirty. It was a pretty average stay, and I wouldn't recommend the place at all.

It's a decent budget option. If you can get into the sister hostel down the street, Snowdrift Lodge, I'd choose that. After a long day skiing, the hot springs down the street are worth using, and you can shower there instead of at the hostel.

The place was dirty and poorly maintained, and after a week there we couldn't stand it. The beds were uncomfortable, and the free wifi disappeared whenever more than four people were in the hostel. They vacuumed at 8am and dusted the ceilings over us while we were eating breakfast. The bar photos are inaccurate, there was no pool table or computers. The tiny room called the TV room had a screen about the size of an airplane seatback TV. They say they offer discount tickets to Hakuba 47, but what they actually do is buy two season passes and rent them out. Stays have a 60-day cancellation period. For the price, this was a very below average hostel.

The only bright spot was the food. It was amazing, and the only Japanese person working here made it. The hospitality was awful, the rooms were tiny, and the owner wasn't helpful with information about getting around town. Staff and their friends also held loud parties until 5am before a powder day.

Friendly staff, breakfast included, and a shared kitchen. The walls carry noise, but it's a good cheap option if you're on a budget. It's an Aussie-filled backpackers place for snow, the location is okay, and you'll need to take the bus to get to the lifts.
