Grand Hotel Hamamatsu

The rooms could use work, but the location suited us since we were driving and away from the busy Shinkansen and train areas. Service was great. People have mentioned trouble with staff and translations, but I didn't expect much English, and we managed check-in with Google Translate. Parking was free across the street, with plenty of spaces, and there's a pedestrian crossover at P3. Our room included breakfast, which was worth it, with lots of Japanese and American options. The Grand Hotel may have been grand in its heyday. The lobby and main area are beautiful, but the guest rooms are dated, straight out of the 70s or earlier. They are large, though, with room for three of us, a sitting area, and a small table. The beds were okay for one night, but the A/C struggled to keep the room even around 75 overnight. In summer, expect the room to be hot, and the A/C may not be on before you arrive.

Breakfast was excellent, and the staff were friendly. Our room was big, with a comfortable bed. The hotel feels opulent, though a bit worn, and still has good bones. We'd stay again.

Zaza City Hamamatsu is about a 15-minute walk away, with lively nightlife across the street. Family mart is within a five-minute walk.

The one bright spot was the modern dining room at the top of the hotel, with a great variety of breakfast food included. The staff service was great too. But the rooms and furnishings feel 40-50 years old, and the hotel badly needs renovation. The mattress was a brick, and I had the absolute worst sleep of my life. Back around 50 years ago, this place might have felt grand, with old-money vibes. In 2023, though, I found it shocking how outdated, low-tech, and uncomfortable it was, especially for Japan.
