The meals were a highlight for us: dinner came in the Japanese-style part of the room, and breakfast was served in a big shared space. Both felt like a chance to experience Japanese culture, especially seeing families take their time over breakfast. The rooftop baths are separated for men and women, and have lovely bay views. We also really enjoyed the staff, who were warm and fun to talk with, unlike the feel of a large chain. Getting around was easy. The #30 bus stops right across from Hotel Kikusuitei and connects with the city centre, the amusement park, and Hamamatsu Flower Gardens. We tried walking to the gardens and wouldn't recommend that. The hotel is also beside an eel restaurant, though nearby dining mattered less to us because we had the meal package. The view of the bay from the rooms, onsen, lobby, and seaside path toward town was fantastic. We chose the hotel for its location, the in-room mix of Western and Japanese sleeping areas, meals in the Japanese-style space, and that nearby bus stop. The Japanese side of our room met expectations, but the Western side felt much worse than it had in the photos. It had a worn, dated feel, perhaps like it was from the 1970s, with grubby-looking carpet, bed covers, and furniture. The layout was awkward, with shelves and the TV dividing the space, and a very worn metal basin in the corner. The damp smell from the green lift carpet was so strong we held our breath getting in; the patterned hallway carpets had it too, though less strongly. The rooms, hallways, and lobby all seem overdue for renovation and a more consistent look. I loved enough about the stay to give it four stars rather than three, but I would only return after a complete renovation.

The service was unforgettable, and I loved it. Beautiful Japanese countryside too, the best I've ever seen.

At breakfast they had quietly made a vegetarian set for my daughter, even though we'd only mentioned her diet in passing. The salmon and tomato dishes were some of the best Japanese breakfasts I've had in my 38 years here. When we checked out, they surprised us with a lovely little birthday bouquet. The staff had also been very polite when I called about the reservation, and never made me feel awkward about my imperfect Japanese pronunciation. My daughter and I were on a birthday trip and had a great time. Our first room was in the older wing, small and visibly aged, so I asked about an upgrade. They were immediately friendly and moved us to a huge, two-room Japanese-style suite with a nice lake view for only about 8,000 yen more. Ask for the "Shinkan" if you want the retro atmosphere in a newer part of the building. The onsen water is salty from the nearby ocean and left our skin feeling soft and moisturized. The room had great amenities, and fresh flowers were arranged in the hallway and inside. The futon was comfortable, so we slept really well. We found a delicious udon shop nearby for dinner. It's an older, slightly run-down building, but the food was lovely and the service amazing.

I was glad I could have curry at breakfast, since I love it. They served a Japanese set meal, with bread, curry, juice, milk, coffee, and other drinks available too. Dinner was thoughtfully made. I especially liked the sesame tofu, sashimi with ryukyu cucumbers, and sweet potato buns. The mackerel rice was so good I wanted more, but I was full. The local Mikkabi mandarin beer had a pleasant sweetness and aroma. The open-air observation bath looked out over the Ferris wheel and the Lake Hamana Palpal attractions, with a wonderful open feeling. The hot spring water was lovely and warmed me through. After a day visiting the flower park, zoo, and other places, I appreciated being able to unwind in the lobby with tea, juice, coffee, and other drinks. There were cute hanging dolls on display as well. My room was spotless, and although the hotel is quite far from home, I left wanting to enjoy a stay here again. Thank you for the hospitality.

I went for a day-use hot spring visit and parked in the second lot next door. The bath has a gorgeous view, with nothing blocking it, and I could see the Ferris wheel against the sunset. The staff were really nice, and there are souvenirs for sale too. If I'm around Lake Hamana, I'd definitely stop in again. It might be a while before I can return, but next time I'd stay overnight.
