Ryokan Kinsui

The bath had a lovely, distinctive scent, and the maifan stone gave the water a hot spring-like feel. Breakfast was delicious and left me very satisfied. It was a peaceful, indulgent break, waking up to waves on Lake Hamana instead of an alarm. I had a wonderful stay, though families with children might find it a little dull.

We were able to properly unwind on our first trip together as a couple in a long time, enjoying the inn’s traditional atmosphere. It was quiet and restful, and the proprietress was friendly. When we asked about sightseeing, she brought us brochures and gave us lots of helpful information. Both meals were just the right size, and the food was tasty, with much of it sourced from Lake Hamana. Shampoo and other amenities were supplied, though I’d suggest bringing your own face wash.

The lakeside setting is so quiet, with hardly any traffic, and it’s easy to relax to the sound of the waves. I enjoyed chatting with the landlady over a glass of her homemade fruit wine. The kaiseki meal was a good amount, and the fish was delicious.

I booked on a whim the day before, and was surprised to find that my room was in a separate building. The staff were friendly and kind, and the window looked out over Lake Hamana. If I get the chance to stay again, I’d like to spend more time in the room after checking in and enjoy the meals, rather than just using it as a place to sleep.
