Hida was so quiet and lovely, with hardly any tourists around. We ended up here for the day after the Shirakawa-go bus tickets had sold out, which turned out to be lucky. Before catching the 4.10pm train back to Takayama, we had soba at local favorite Sobasho Nakaya.

A lot of visitors come because of the Your Name anime, and the station could make their visit more interesting. I get that it’s still just a train station, not a tourist attraction, but people do come by to see it. It would be nice if the station took that into account and found a way to improve the experience.

We had a great time wandering around this lovely town, even though most places were closed on the day we visited. The people were lovely too. When our limited express ran late, the station master at Hida Furukawa helped us change our bookings, including moving our connecting shinkansen to exactly the right time. Thanks to that, we got back to our hotel in Kanazawa at a reasonable hour.

I spent several days here by myself and really enjoyed the stay. It’s a lovely, relaxing town rather than a tourist trap. I was also pleasantly surprised to find two exceptional Sake breweries.
