Hida Tomoe Hotel

Breakfast was a real highlight, served in a private, elegant traditional tatami room. This family hotel is nicely designed in Japanese style and sits in the center of the cute village of Furukawa. Everything in the room was in just the right place, so it felt like home straight away. The good mattress mattered a lot to us. Just excellent!

The staff were attentive and kind to our children, explaining each dish one by one. Service was excellent. We had breakfast and dinner on trays in a private room with a hearth, and charcoal was lit in the evening. The hearty Hida countryside cooking was carefully prepared and fascinating, with dishes that gave us a sense of how people in Hida made the most of limited resources. The Hida beef steak was a delicious, generous 120g. The sashimi was described as river pufferfish. I’d thought it was river fish, and it had no odor and a rich flavor. Apparently it was catfish farmed using knowledge from the local pufferfish farming industry. The food and staff service alone make this place worth staying at.
