Our stay gave us a peaceful break from spending months in Osaka, and the area's history led us to several Shinto Shrines nearby. Mayumi looked after us beautifully. On the first night, she made sukiyaki with local Nara beef (Yamato), fresh local vegetables, and four kinds of mushrooms in her special soy sauce mixture. The next evening's Kaiseki meal had 12 dishes, with lots of different flavors, textures, and distinctive presentations. Breakfasts were different, too. The first was traditional Japanese, with homemade miso soup, the best we've ever had, and smoked salmon as highlights. Our last breakfast was Western style, with poached eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, creamed corn soup that was uniquely delicious, plus breads, butter, and blueberry jam. We highly recommend Sugigase and will definitely come back on our next visit to Japan.

I'd never stayed at a ryokan before, and the owners were so kind. They prepared the food beautifully, too. I enjoyed the two-night stay so much that I want to bring my family next time.

The beautiful proprietress welcomed us with a lovely smile. A river runs beside the building, and there are dining courses where you can eat by the water. I came hoping to try wild ayu (sweetfish), and the indoor meal was served as an ayu course. There was so much excellent food that I couldn't finish everything, though I took the leftover ayu home. The ayu porridge at the end, more like rice porridge in ayu broth, had such a delicious stock that I managed to eat it all even though I was full.

The sound of the nearby stream and insects coming through our open window was lovely. We drove here and arrived after sunset, so we couldn't really see the surroundings. This was the first ryokan my wife and I had visited. At dinner, the Yamato beef, venison sashimi, and mushrooms that seemed to have been picked by the owner made a superb combination. Breakfast came with a spectacular view of the flowing stream and was a pleasure for both the eyes and palate. I heard the menu changes with the seasons, so I plan to return in another season and try something different.
