Kamenoi Hotel Hikone

The room had plenty of space for one person, and waking up to the view of Lake Biwa was lovely. I did have an unpleasant sewage smell from the bathroom, though I could put up with it for just one night. Management should look into it. The public bath was peaceful, and I caught a nice sunset while bathing despite the mostly overcast weather. I enjoyed the kaiseki dinner too. I wish they provided body lotion, since the chlorine dries out my skin. Getting around is easier if you have a car. I relied on the free shuttle, which only runs a handful of times each day, so you need to plan ahead and reserve a spot. I don't have a Japanese number, so I emailed them. They replied fairly quickly and confirmed my ride from Hikone station. The service was excellent, and I thought it was great value for money.

We were pleased to find the hotel looked as impressive in person as it did in the website photos when we visited in Dec 2025. It's right by the lake and close to town, and both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were delicious. The facilities were great, and there was a cultural performance on the night we stayed. The whole team was friendly and helpful. We had a booking problem at check-in, but manager Nishida-san sorted it out straight away without any hassle. Receptionist Nakata-san also did her best to help us during our stay. We'd love to come back next time we're at Lake Biwa.

After using the public bath, I went to the restaurant hoping to get something to eat. The women there looked at me strangely and seemed annoyed, and I couldn't get any food. I then tried to buy souvenirs, but they looked at me and pointed. I understood that the restaurant women had reported me, and I was basically kicked out. It made me really uncomfortable. Sorry.

We chose a corner tatami room and really liked how spacious it was and the view. The private onsen was lovely too. I went with my wife and our 2.5-year-old toddler. I also loved the kaiseki dinner, see my photos and videos. When you arrive and see mostly Japanese guests, you get the feeling it was a good choice.
