It really does feel like home, with a very welcoming owner who's more relaxed and flexible than at most Japanese hostels 😁. The old wooden house looks lovely, and the location is handy, right across from the bus and ferry terminal and close to the castle, restaurants, and supermarkets. Bike rental is cheap, too. It was quiet during my stay because there were very few guests. With a full house, though, it could get noisy since the rooms aren't soundproofed.

The guesthouse is Masato's own handmade place. He's a friendly carpenter, and he cooks a great dinner as well. We spent three weeks in Japan, and this was one of our best overnight stays. Give the island at least a day or two for hiking. Both the Kyushu nature trail and the well-marked Olle trail are good options.

The location makes getting around easy, with the ferry, bus, information desk, and rental bikes all nearby. Just note that many restaurants shut on weekdays. There's no Wi-Fi here, though the information desk across the way has it from 6:00 to 20:00. Laundry takes a little planning. The washing machine had no water, but its spin cycle worked. A nearby dryer costs 100 yen for 8 minutes or 300 yen for 24 minutes. You can also hang clothes on the veranda if you bring enough hangers. There are no tissues. It's a bit lacking, but good value for the money.
