Ryokan Tanoura-Onsen

We enjoyed the great food and warm hospitality.

The cancellation process after a flight cancellation was a very disappointing experience. I'd planned to stay overnight on a remote island, but strong winds that day forced me to cancel. When I explained, I was charged 6,000 yen, described as “a fee charged to Jalan.” Later, an email said the inn had changed things to avoid being charged a “transfer fee to Jalan.” Even after that fee was no longer charged, I was still asked to pay. The next day I offered to bring 6,000 yen in cash and asked if I could at least use the hot spring for 30 minutes, but they coldly refused, saying they don't offer day trips. I ended up paying by bank transfer. The account details they gave were under a personal name rather than the inn's, which made me worry the payment wouldn't be recorded as revenue. Other inns had never charged me a cancellation fee when my flight was cancelled, so this opaque, bureaucratic response left me extremely disappointed and frustrated.

We stayed as a couple and were treated very attentively in what felt like a traditional Japanese inn. Our clean room had a quiet cove stretching out in front of it. Both meals were served in our room, and the portions were so generous we couldn't finish everything. Even the cheapest plan would have been plenty. There was lots of local seafood, and every dish was delicious, from the sashimi and ghost squid to the Hirado beef shabu-shabu, tempura, and dried horse mackerel. Even the tea showed attention to detail: we had Ureshino tea brewed in a teapot instead of tea bags.

The fish was the reason I came, and the all-you-can-eat fish dish was truly delicious. I also got the bath to myself, so I could relax, and the inn is right by the sea with a lovely view.
