Hiroshima International Youth House

We had a really enjoyable two-night stay. The room was a bit old, but comfortable and spacious. We had asked for a nice view when booking, without knowing whether the staff would notice the request, but they gave us a beautiful river view room. That was very kind, and we were grateful. The location was convenient too: a three minute walk to the nearby bus stop, Nakajima Elementary School, seven minutes to the nearby tram stop, and ten minutes to Peace Park. The affordable price left us feeling satisfied. The one downside was that they don't provide extra pillows.

I ended up staying here for five days, though I had only planned on one because something unavoidable came up during my independent trip. I don't speak Japanese at all, and the staff helped me through a very personal, embarrassing problem. I'm deeply grateful and will remember their kindness. If I'm back in Hiroshima, I'll stay here again. Thank you.

The breakfast was the worst part of the stay. There was no rice, miso soup, or cereal, just cold, partly frozen broccoli, cold pasta, plain bread that seemed nearly stale, average potato salad, and a strange thick soup or stew. The toasters took ages and barely toasted, and there was often too little food. Save yourself the trouble and buy breakfast elsewhere. I hope nobody pays for it. The location is good for the Peace Park and museum, and the staff were fairly helpful. My room was okay, although a cupboard door was broken and propped up with a doorstop. Staff made a fuss when I cancelled the seminar room my tour operator had booked from 8-9pm. I explained I didn't need it and would probably still be out for dinner, but they wanted me to sit in there and pretend to use it. Ridiculous.

After travelling around Japan, this was a welcome change from the more traditional places. It had western beds and all the modern conveniences, and the price made it hard to complain. The hotel is starting to look a little old, though.
