Even with heavy snow outside, it was warm and dry inside. The rooms were very clean and had all the amenities we needed, and the owners were some of the nicest people, going above and beyond for us.

The house got a little cold at night, but the futon was warm and comfortable. I stayed for one night in early October in this traditional Japanese home, with tatami floors and futons. The couple run the hostel from their own house and offer train station pick-up. They were sociable, and I enjoyed talking with them without feeling crowded by it. I’d highly recommend staying here in Nagano if you want a traditional home and friendly hosts.

The room was tiny for four people. We could barely move around the futons, and there was nowhere for our things except a space outside the room. It was listed as a “private room,” but felt like a dorm because we could hear everything happening in the other rooms. With one bathroom for eight or nine people, you either have to get up very early to shower or wait. Neither the shower nor bathroom door had a lock. It felt expensive for what we got, as if everything was set up to make the place as profitable as possible. Even the coffee was bad and cost 200¥.

We really enjoyed this traditional Japanese hostal and recommend it. The owners are kind and will drive you to the snow monkey park for a fee :)

Guest House Yukuru is in an amazing location. We enjoyed our stay, including a trip with our hosts to see the snow monkeys. Their shuttle is free and flexible, and they were great with children and very accommodating 😊
