The Retreat

The area around the retreat was livelier than I expected, with really loud music playing outside in the mornings and evenings. The staff were friendly and the food was good. A few more outdoor things for kids would have been nice.

We picked the hotel building’s bring-your-own BBQ plan because we have three kids and wanted good value over fancy food. TRIAL is close by, so buying food was easy. After check-in, we had the welcome dessert and free drinks, including beer. Cocktails were made by the staff and took a while, while beer and highballs were self-serve and quick. The bar is on the first floor of the hotel building, and the drizzle may have been inconvenient for people in cottages or tents. It was cold outside, but the outdoor heaters made the BBQ manageable. Our room had a loft bed, and the kids kept climbing up and down for no reason, clearly having a lot of fun. Breakfast was a half-buffet with sea bream chazuke as the main dish, though we would have felt satisfied without it too. The staff were kind and eager to entertain guests throughout, which made the stay comfortable.

I’ve stayed here seven times now. In summer I don’t like bugs, so I chose the hotel building. The room was clean and comfortable with air conditioning, and our balcony let us watch the campfire from above. We mostly stay in the tents, though (^^). They’re spacious, stylish, and spotless, with a separate toilet and shower inside. There’s plenty of heating, so being outdoors is comfortable too. Dinner was fancy and looked great in photos. In the morning there’s a buffet with a choice of Japanese or Western food. You can make s’mores at the campfire, and kids have a place to light fireworks. You can buy them at the front desk or bring your own. The staff are the best part for me. Everyone is so kind. I especially like the guy who looks like Yuki Yamada (^^). The receptionist and the man at the campfire are both lovely. I was unsure about glamping at my age, but older people can enjoy it too. I brought my grandchildren, and we even played tennis lol. Retreat always gives us such a relaxing place to stay. Thank you!
