Beach Hotel Sunshine Ishigakijima

The hotel’s ofuro is worth trying if you haven’t experienced a Japanese public bath before. If you’re nervous about being seen, nobody is paying attention, though visible tattoos are judged and shouldn’t be taken into the bath. Our room had a lovely view and was a little cramped for three, but we weren’t tripping over one another. Breakfast costs ¥2700 per person if it isn’t included in your package. That’s a lot, but the food was great and I thought it was worth trying.

The room had a stunning view of the sea, one I could look at every day and still remember. The resort felt laid-back and relaxing, and the staff really seemed to care about serving us. I’d recommend staying here for a vacation.

I had a really good time here. From the room, the ocean looks amazing, and the infinity pool sits right by the sea. You can borrow life savers and other pool gear at no charge. The rooms are small, but comfortable enough for a stay. Breakfast was the weak point for me, with little variety and not much flavor. I’ve found that’s common at places around Okinawa.

There’s a nice lunch spot with rental cars about three minutes away, called Coconut terrace. For getting around, the hotel is roughly 15 minutes from central Ishigaki, and a taxi cost ¥1000 in 2024. The rooms were clean and fine, with ocean views. Reception, the souvenir area, water, and breakfast room are on the first floor, while dinner is served in a pavilion. The pool is too shallow for swimming, and the sea is rough with lots of rocks, though banana boat rides and similar activities are available. Diving and the stalactite cave are about half an hour away.
