Japan is still my favorite travel destination, as you can see from my other reviews. I first posted this review on February 4, 2026, and changed my rating from 4 to 2 after reading the hotel’s February 9 response. I care about how a business responds to reasonable concerns, and I find it highly inappropriate to repeatedly bring up a reviewer’s nationality in a negative way. Because Google Reviews has a character limit, I kept only the points to improve that were raised in the hotel’s response and removed the six recommendations and other comments from my original review. 1. I mentioned a noticeable unpleasant smell in the towels and bedding, and that the room wasn’t being cleaned as advertised on the booking platform. The hotel said it didn’t use fabric softener for environmental reasons, that the platform’s “daily cleaning provided” wording was an AI translation error, and that sheet changes cost extra. When I booked, the listing did say “daily cleaning provided,” but that wording has since been removed. It still doesn’t say that room cleaning isn’t provided or that changing sheets costs extra. 2. When I arrived, there was no staff member present. My name and room number were displayed where anyone could see them, and it was clearly indicated that the key was in an unlocked room with the door open. That raised a security concern because anyone could access this information. The hotel replied that Ishigaki is very safe, local residents don’t lock their homes or cars, no dangerous people stay at the hotel, and there hadn’t been a crime there in ten years, so guests needn’t worry. Many self check-in places in Japan use passcode lockboxes for keys and email the code to guests for their safety. Does that mean those places are less safe than Ishigaki? 3. I raised the lack of soundproofing between rooms, something many other guests had mentioned before. The response asked how lonely it would be if only your own voice could be heard, and whether other people’s voices are necessarily unpleasant. I enjoy conversation, but I don’t want to hear conversations from the rooms next door. Not hearing other guests talk doesn’t make me lonely. 4. I said the Japanese-style breakfast had relatively few side dishes for the amount of rice, and didn’t include the soup and fish shown in other guests’ photos. The hotel replied that people should eat healthy food, that its meals are organic and additive-free with carefully selected ingredients, and that it doesn’t want to increase menu variety with convenient or additive-containing foods some guests prefer. It also said eating its pesticide-free local vegetables is said to benefit the body, even at a cellular level. Is that a proper answer to my original question? No. Please compare my Japanese-style breakfast photo with those from other guests, all of which show soup and fish, and consider whether differential treatment might reasonably have been perceived, especially alongside repeated references to a guest’s nationality that wasn’t mentioned in my original review. Eco-friendly practices shouldn’t be confused with cleanliness. An ashtray soaked by rain and full of cigarette butts left by unknown guests in front of a non-smoking guest’s room wasn’t emptied during my entire stay. Calling that environmentally friendly doesn’t make sense. Skipping daily sheet changes for environmental reasons may be acceptable, and I often choose that myself, but guests should be told before booking.

The owner and staff were all kind, and the owner was especially helpful, answering my questions quickly both before and during the trip. They even drove me to the port or airport. I’d gladly stay here again if I return to ishigaki, and next time I’d rent a car to explore more of the island. I originally planned for two nights, then extended to three. The room and facilities were clean and nice, and the breakfast I had one morning was fresh and good. It felt like a pleasant oasis. They care about the environment and use products that are good for it. The center is a little far, about 14 minutes by car, but I rented a bike from them and got around well. You can rent a car there too, and I’d recommend it.

The staff were so friendly and helpful when I lost my Apple Watch on a morning snorkeling tour. I only realized after I got back to the hotel, and since we didn’t have a Japanese phone number, they called the tour operator for us. The operator drove us back to the boat, and I found my watch! There’s also a cute toy poodle named Choco and two cats. The hotel manager makes really good coffee, too.

A charming, peaceful place right by the beach, with cats around the property and clean, organic food. It feels cute and safe, with a relaxed vibe. Such a nice change of pace from Tokyo and Kyoto. Recommended!

The only drawback was public transport. Without a car, you need the bus, so we couldn’t stay out in the city too late. Even so, I’d definitely recommend the place and would love to return. We spent five days there in January 2025 on our first trip to Japan, and got a taste of Japanese hospitality. Our hosts were friendly, kind, helpful, and just great. The room was traditional, with tatami mats and futon beds. We had traditional Japanese breakfasts, and were invited to dinner one evening. It was a great time with a really family-like atmosphere.
