I came back to Ishinomaki Home Base for a second stay because I enjoyed my first visit in August 2023. The house is beautiful and has all the amenities you need. The staff are friendly, and if you ask, they’ll tell you a lot about the history of Ishinomaki Lab. There’s a Family Mart right next door. In the morning, from 7-16, you can get coffee and choose a pastry. I’d read earlier comments about noise and brought earplugs just in case. The staff had actually left some in the room, but I didn’t need them. Noise from outside and from other guests was minimal, and I slept well both nights. It’s a great place to stay if you’re interested in furniture or community development, or if you’re simply visiting Ishinomaki or Onagawa.

A beautiful, inspiring place, with inspiring people.

This stylish hotel is also a showroom for Ishinomaki Lab's beautiful furniture. It has a clean, modern Japanese Scandinavian look, with useful self catering amenities. The rooms and bathrooms are well maintained, very clean, and open and inviting. The main drawback is the lack of soundproofing. You can hear almost everything from neighboring rooms, which I consider a serious design flaw as a contractor. Earplugs in the welcome package are their attempt to address it, but that isn't an ideal fix. If you're able to live with the noise, it's a comfortable stay in a beautifully designed space. I hope this is correct now! Let me know if any further adjustments are needed.

We checked in at 5 PM on Friday, May 31, 2024, with my preschooler, and were meant to check out on June 1. The staff and people who seemed to be managers were polite. A tall male staff member who also worked at the cafe was especially easy to understand and left a good impression. After going out for dinner, we came back around 7 PM, took a bath, and went to bed at 9. About 10 PM, we heard a key card beeping as another group entered a room. Things got worse around 10:20, when another group struggled to get in. The door kept ringing without a security alarm or key card for a while. After about 10 minutes, it seemed they got into the building. I didn't know whether they were guests, and there were children with them, so I hesitated to help and did nothing. A young woman loudly called, "There's no one here!" and "I thought you'd broken that machine!" Two young men answered, "But there was a car there." Their voices carried clearly into our room. At first I thought they were just a little noisy and confused by the lock, but they kept banging around as they passed our room, apparently still wearing their shoes even though there are slippers in the guest area on the second floor. At one point my child needed the bathroom, so I stepped out and we made eye contact. I said good evening, but he ignored me. I could see he had his shoes on. Once back in our room, we could still hear footsteps going back and forth and loud voices saying things like, "Wow! The room is so spacious!" and "It's so clean!" Most of the remarks seemed to come from women. My child finally got scared, and even as an adult I felt uneasy. I called the support line, explained what was happening, and left at 10:50 PM. We had read a troubling story on the booking site about someone who booked the last room after the same group had reserved three of the four rooms. I thought we wouldn't have to share with such inconsiderate guests, so we tried a place we don't usually choose. Instead, after only about five hours, we had the unusual experience of leaving early. The man who answered the phone sounded helpless and apologetic. I had no particular complaint about the service or facilities, but was shocked by how poor the other guests' behavior was, even if it was a coincidence. The male staff member on the phone also said the group had seemed drunk when asking about the lock. The website warned about soundproofing, so I expected some noise, but I'd never encountered people this rude before. After leaving, I stopped at the convenience store next door and noticed a parking lot in front of the building. I had parked in the convenience store lot, so I wondered whether this was simply bad luck or if there was a high chance of getting in the way of the unfortunate person. If you're worried, try checking the reviews on booking sites. Loud voices are a matter of personal judgment, but I feel something could be done about people wearing shoes indoors. I was too uneasy about staying overnight and didn't want to use the cafe, but the staff were kind, so I'd like to visit the cafe if I'm in the area. If a large group books all four rooms, they could enjoy themselves together without worrying as much about noise. Otherwise, it should be fine as long as guests are considerate about their voices and footsteps.
