For a traditional stay on a budget, this is a lovely 100-year-old wooden and paper house with a little courtyard garden to admire from the common room. The futons were super comfortable, and the owner was very nice, though he didn’t speak much English. It’s a guest house with only a few rooms, so your experience can depend on who else is staying. The paper walls don’t block much sound, and one night someone left quite a mess in the shared bathroom. It’s about a 30-minute bus ride to Kyoto central station, and the buses made it easy for us to get to the places we wanted to visit. One note: this is Ebisu Guest House. Google seems to mix it up with Ebisu Imadegaw Guest House around the corner, but as far as I understand, they’re completely different places.

The one drawback for me was the location. It’s near the Golden Pavilion, but otherwise feels a bit out of the way, which is why I took off a star. The price was reasonable, though, and the owner was very friendly and helpful. It’s a nice old house that gives you a sense of what staying in a traditional Japanese home is like.

The owners were kind, and the scenery around the house was beautiful. I stayed at guest house ebisu on October 12th and 13th, 2018, and really enjoyed it. It’s a relaxing, restorative place to experience a traditional Japanese atmosphere and culture in Kyoto. I’d put it among the best choices for that, so be sure to visit if that’s what you’re looking for.

This renovated traditional Japanese house has a peaceful, charming feel. It seems just right if you want to take your time experiencing Kyoto.
