The GrandWest Arashiyama

Our suite felt spacious and comfortable, and it was spotless with a good range of amenities. Breakfast was delicious, served in a really cozy cafe downstairs. The staff had even left handwritten English greetings for us to see as we came and went. My extended family in another room had the same experience, and they want to return just for the hotel.

The rooms have lovely natural light and feel spacious, peaceful, and very zen. Staff were accommodating and understanding, and breakfast was delicious. You can borrow bikes for free, and the station is only a short walk away. It's also an easy stroll to the bamboo forest and lots of small shops, including a large kimono rental chain. There's no elevator, unfortunately, but the staff were very helpful with our suitcases. I was extremely pleased with the stay.

Service was great, and the four of us had a beautiful, airy family room with wood floors and mountain views. There's also a cute little tent with lights on the roof, a fun touch. The lack of an elevator made getting our heavy cases up and down the stairs difficult. The hotel is near the main river and shopping streets, though there aren't many restaurants around. At night the sound insulation wasn't great, and we could hear cars going by.

I really enjoyed my stay. The staff were so polite that they let me check in several hours before the usual time. My room was huge, with a traditional tatami area and a soaking tub, both of which I appreciated. There's a sitting space on the roof, too. The hotel is close to Gion, but the area doesn't have all the crowds.
