Auberge Peacock Hill

The breakfast was the bright spot for us. The bread and omelets were delicious, and the shampoo and body soap supplied had a nice scent. Our room was spacious for two and very clean, but it faced away from the sea, so the window looked onto trees. A bidet in the toilet would have been nice. The owner's wife was polite and pleasant, while the husband seemed average. We skipped the open-air bath after seeing lots of insects gathered around the entrance light. There’s plenty of nature here, so summer might be difficult if you dislike bugs. In the indoor bath, something like a boiler for the shower made bothersome noise and smells whenever it ran. The place was a little hard to locate, though using the car navigation should be fine.

Dinner was a delicious full course, especially the appetizers, soup, crab pasta, sea bream meunière, and beef stew. We also added an abalone steak to share, which we enjoyed. My husband and I liked this charming little red-brick inn. Ringing the entrance bell with the sea in view made us happy. The hot spring bath was private, so we could relax together. At night we saw stars from the open-air bath, and in the morning there was a view of the sea. We’d definitely return.

The bath was for our exclusive use, which I was glad about. The water runs quite hot, so take care not to overheat. Breakfast was tasty and generous, and I was very satisfied. I’d like to stay with dinner included next time. I’d forgotten my disposable chopsticks, and they kindly provided some.

The building is old, but it’s spotless and clearly well looked after. It has a cute retro feel, and the landlady is lovely. The hot springs were great, though only one group can go in at a time, so you have to plan your turn. The food was excellent, just what you’d expect from an auberge. Everything tasted good, and the crab pasta especially stuck with me.
