Hotel Ito Powell

The rooms are large and the sea views are breathtaking. It’s a nice place and reasonably priced, though the rooms need refurbishing and the hot spring feels small and dark. Nothing particularly special.

I really liked the outdoor rotenburo. The volcanic water felt great on my skin, the temperature was just right, and the ocean at sunset was a lovely view. They post sunrise times too, if you want to get up early and watch it. The walk from the indoor bath to the rotenburo is a bit long and chilly, though, and I found the indoor bath lukewarm. The course dinner was very good and there was loads of it: pork shabushabu, Udon, sashimi, fresh abalone, and plenty more. Breakfast had a broad mix of Japanese and Western choices. I was asked at check-in to come at 8 because a large group was staying, which was fine, but then they only gave me until 9. A relaxed buffet breakfast takes me longer than an hour, especially when the hotel had asked me to come early. The hotel is right by the beach and has a decent size, but it looks old. The rooms feel dated, though they’re very spacious, very clean, and have self-contained bathrooms. The bed was comfortable, but seemed sized for Japanese heights, so taller people might find it small. Staff were friendly enough when I ran into them. My stay was satisfactory.

It’s close to the station and reasonably priced, so I found it perfectly adequate for a casual stay. The building has that Showa-era feel and is old, but it’s cared for and still comfortable. Every room faces the ocean, and the Wi-Fi works well. The food isn’t fancy, but there’s a lot to choose from and it’s satisfying. There are a few manga in the lobby that you can take to your room, which was a nice touch. The bathroom is on the small side. The open-air bath only fits about five people, so depending on the time you might not get to use it.
