Aoki-nagi-no-yado Meijikan

The room looked out over Toi port, and we spotted some majestic ships from the window. This was one of my favorite places from all my travels, in a dreamy town that became our favorite spot in Japan. The building is old and vintage, but the staff were very helpful. It has good amenities, including a sauna and natural hot springs, with the right attire. There’s also a 7-11 within walking distance.

The staff were kind and welcoming, and even though most were locals who didn’t speak much English, they were always helpful. I can’t remember their names, but I’m grateful for how relaxing they made the trip. I don’t eat raw fish, so I asked if the fish could be cooked instead. They were happy to grill it for me, and although they kept apologizing, I appreciated them accommodating me. Dinner at the ryokan is worth trying, and if you can, reserve a table by the ocean. I stayed for two weekdays, so it was pleasantly quiet with few other guests around. The onsen was wonderful, and I especially enjoyed the free massage chairs. The building has some age showing in the hall and carpet, but it’s still charming, with breathtaking ocean views from almost every room, especially the dining hall. I loved my stay and will definitely come back.

The old-fashioned feel gives this hotel its own charm. We enjoyed staying in a traditional room with futons and a view of the Pacific Ocean, where we could hear the waves. The hot bath was spacious and pleasant.

We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day here, and the setting was superb, with views over Suruga Bay and a small beach just in front. On Christmas Day we took a long walk along the coastal road and enjoyed the bay views. There’s a 7-11 next door for supplies, and the room fridge was handy. Getting there and back was straightforward with a bus stop right outside. On the 26th, we took the 10.22 bus to Mishima. They checked me in in English, a first for me in Japan. Our room was spacious and comfortable with great Wi-Fi. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, and put out our futons while we had dinner. Dinner was amazing, and we enjoyed as much ice cream as we liked for dessert. The hot spring was great too. One downside: I asked about having a private onsen session during our stay, but was told it would cost extra for 45 minutes. I wish all guests got one free private booking. Definitely worth staying here. We hope to come back someday.
