I was nervous about booking because the ryokan is some distance from big cities and I was traveling alone without a car. Getting there from Tokyo took about 3.5 hours, but the trip was straightforward. Once I arrived, I kept saying "wow" out loud. The setting and atmosphere were absolutely beautiful. For two days I felt like I was in my own little bubble. I had a huge, incredibly comfortable junior suite with a private onsen, and the river right outside made it even more relaxing. Breakfast and dinner by the river were peaceful, and the food was delicious every day. The staff were friendly, attentive, and spoke English very well. They were curious about my travels, and when I arrived in the rain, someone came out with an umbrella to greet me. From the ryokan it’s a short bus ride or drive to wasabi farms, and Joren waterfall, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. The Izu region produces 50% of the wasabi, and it’s a beautiful area worth exploring. I’d absolutely return and have already told people about the ryokan. A friend booked it for their Japan trip just a few weeks after my stay.

The staff made a mixed impression. Most were attentive and welcoming, especially the foreign staff, but one Japanese receptionist was rude and passive-aggressive from check-in through checkout. We felt uncomfortable each time, and got the impression she didn’t want to be there or have foreign guests. She talked over coworkers and seemed disrespectful, particularly toward the foreign staff. At arrival, while we were unloading two large cases and a small carry-on, she started to pick up one of the large suitcases, then immediately let go, called out that it was heavy, and hurried back inside before we’d finished. We don’t expect staff to act as servants, and aren’t entitled to luggage help every time. But since she’d come out apparently to help, it was disheartening that she didn’t try with the other bags. At checkout another woman kindly wheeled a large case to our car, and we appreciated it. The stay itself had plenty to like. Our Japanese Twin Room with Private Open-Air Bath and River View at Tatsuta Ryokan was clean, very spacious, and comfortable. It appeared renovated, and though the ryokan is older, it was well maintained. Two AC units kept the room comfortable, the river sounds were soothing, and there was plenty of parking. The elevator was slow, but not a major problem. The private onsen tub was clean, big enough for two, and had a cold water tap to adjust the temperature. The semi-outdoor shower area made it easy to go between the shower and bath, but it was extremely dark, stayed wet, and smelled odd from the wooden floorboards. Showering there wasn’t comfortable. Otherwise, the bathroom was fine. Breakfast was delicious with lots of variety, and the dining area had lovely, peaceful river views. For a ryokan meant to feel personal and intimate, courtesy matters. It’s unfortunate that the receptionist affected the stay, since everything else was amazing. I hope management addresses it. A car is best for getting to the ryokan and around the area.

As a Muslim woman traveling solo, I had a wonderful stay here. The ryokan is easy to get around from and sits among beautiful scenery, with a river, mountains, and a nearby hiking trail leading to Joren Falls. A 7 eleven is about a 15-minute walk away. The staff were warm and helpful, and I had a chance to meet the very kind owner, Yamada-san. They were always ready to assist. The facilities were great: cleansing oil, yukata, pyjamas, and other amenities were provided, and both the public and private onsens were lovely. I had such a good time and will definitely come back.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Best stay of our trip. The room was amazing, 70m2 and facing the stream, with a private tub filled with real onsen water. There are public and private bath options too. The meals were the highlight, exquisite and delicious, especially dinner on the first night. Big shout-out to the chef.

The staff were really friendly, and the place and room were clean. I loved the traditional Japanese style. We only ordered breakfast, and the experience was nice, but we should have included dinner too. Highly recommend this hotel :)
