The house is a real gem, both for its quality and for its setting on one of Japan’s most charming old streets. It’s an authentic historic building, beautifully made, with costly details and ornaments. I’ve seen a little of house renovation in Japan, so I have some sense of the care and quality here. Staying somewhere like this in rural Japan is a rare opportunity, since most hotels, guest houses, and ryokans are clustered in larger towns and finding a place to sleep overnight in the countryside can be extremely difficult, sometimes impossible. This one exists thanks to the kind owners. The price is incredibly low, less than a hostel or dorm, so it makes sense that not every detail will be perfect. Please keep that in mind when deciding whether to stay. If they accept your booking, consider yourself very lucky, and treat the hosts and the property with the respect and gratitude they deserve. Read the guest house’s website before booking. It’s best to arrange the reservation by text message in Japanese.
